奈良県の南東部に位置し、北部及び東部は奈良県上北山村、西部は奈良県十津川村、南部は和歌山県北山村、東南部は三重県熊野市に接しています。
四方を山に囲まれ、西部には釈迦ヶ岳をはじめとする大峯山系が連なり、修験の聖地である大峯奥駈道は「紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道」として、ユネスコの世界遺産に登録され、村の約半分が吉野熊野国立公園のエリアです。
また、下北山村にある「池原ダム湖」「七色ダム湖」は、ブラックバスフィッシングの聖地として知られ評価も高く、全国のアングラー（釣り人）に愛されています。
きなりの郷の「きなり」とは、「まじり気がない」、「純粋な」という意味です。

Shimokitayama Village is located in the southeast of Nara Prefecture and is bordered on the north by Kamikitayama Village, west by Totsukawa Village, south by Kitayama Village and east by Kumano City. It is surrounded by mountains with Mt. Shakagatake to the west.

Anglers for black bass love “Ikehara Dam” and “Nanairo Dam” because these dams are known as sacred places for black bass fishing.
“Kinari no Sato” is another name of Shimokitayama Village, and “kinari” means “genuine” and “pure”.
