第一次大戦では、負傷兵の感染症死亡率は12〜18%。
細菌性肺炎だけで約50,000人の米兵が命を落としました。

しかし第二次大戦では、ペニシリンの大量生産により
感染症死亡率は1%未満にまで激減。

米国のペニシリン生産量は1943年の210億単位から
1945年には6兆8,520億単位へとわずか2年で326倍に。

一方、ドイツはIG・ファルベンの巨大な工業力をもってしても
ペニシリンの大量生産に失敗。サルファ剤のみに依存し、
耐性菌の出現に苦しみました。

日本軍に至っては、医薬品全般が不足し、
太平洋戦線では戦死者よりも病死者の方が多いという
悲惨な状況に陥りました。
