16世紀に起源するといわれる。刀鍛冶の高度な制作技術が包丁に受け継がれ、江戸中期には専業者が株仲間を組織し、現在のような産地を形成した。火造り技法による刃物はその切れ味、使いやすさに定評がある。

In the late half of the 16th century,when tobacco was introduced, the demand for knives was on the increase for cutting tobacco leaves as the popularity of smoking grew. Knives fabricated in Sakai were highly praised for their sharpness, and sold well.
