During the war, the gas?turbine technologies researched by the Japanese Army and Navy were transferred to the Railway Technical Research Institute of JNR after the war, and for a time JNR attempted to develop gas?turbine locomotives fueled by low?cost coal.
Two concepts were proposed: a mainline electric?transmission gas turbine locomotive reminiscent of the EF58, and a C-type mechanical rod-drive gas turbine locomotive intended for secondary main lines.
