横浜市が選ぶ優れた技を持つ職人「横浜マイスター」。
福田喬史（ふくだ　たかふみ ）さんは、製作する弦楽器の表板等の板の厚みに関して、独自のタップトーンを駆使した技法を確立しました。このタップトーンとは、板の厚みを削る際に、適切な厚みを数値だけでなく板を指で叩いた際の音を聴き分けて判断する技法のことです。これにより1 本1本個性が違う木材の性能を最大限に引き出し、美しい音の弦楽器製作が可能となりました。薄く削り過ぎると当初は響いても10年後に美しい音が鳴らなくなることもあるため、美しい音を長く奏でられるよう絶妙な厚さに仕上げています。(2025年10月撮影)

“Yokohama Meisters” are high-skilled handworkers chosen by the City of Yokohama.
FUKUDA Takafumi crafts string instruments using his own method of tap tuning to optimize the thickness of the top and back wood plates. Tap tuning involves tapping one’s finger on the wood plates during the planing process and using the resulting tones as a guide to judge whether the ideal thickness has been achieved, rather than relying on just dimensional measurement. This makes it possible to fully bring out the individual characteristics of each piece of wood and thereby create an instrument that produces beautiful sounds. If the plates are planed too thin, the instrument could lose its exquisite tones over the course of some ten years, so Fukuda expertly fine-tunes the thickness to preserve the instrument’s sound for a long time.
