千年以上の歴史を有する。17世紀前半に藩の御用紙とされ盛んになり、現在も手漉き和紙としては有数の産地。コウゾ、ミツマタ、ガンピを原料とする流し漉きで、乾燥は古来からの技法を伝えている。

Paper-molding was begun about 1000 years ago, and it was developed as a side line of farmers living in this mountainous region. They specialized in producing paper for calligraphy and sumi-e (black-and-white paintings drawn with sumi ink). The raw materials for this papermaking come from kozo, mitsumata, and ganpi trees.
