What is Setouchi Olive Foundation?

1990年代当時、日本最大規模といわれた有害産業廃棄物の不法投棄事件「豊島事件」をきっかけに、建築家の安藤忠雄氏と事件の弁護団長だった中坊公平氏の呼びかけによって設立されたNPO法人。それが、瀬戸内オリーブ基金です。瀬戸内海の美しい自然を守り、再生することを目指して2000年にスタートした活動は、数々の成果を上げながら現在も継続中です。ユニクロ・GUでは、2001年より店頭での募金活動を行い、サポートを続けています。

In the 1990s, following the Teshima Incident, which was considered the largest illegal dumping of hazardous industrial waste in Japan at the time, architect Tadao Ando and Kohei Nakabo, who was the chief defense attorney in the case, called for the establishment of an NPO. That NPO is the Setouchi Olive Foundation. Launched in 2000 with the aim of protecting and restoring the beautiful natural environment of the Seto Inland Sea, the foundation's activities have achieved numerous results and continue to this day. Since 2001, Uniqlo and GU have been conducting fundraising activities at their stores to support the foundation.

What is Setouchi Olive Foundation Volunteer?

参加者がオリーブ基金やその活動への理解を深め、自分の言葉でお客様や周囲の従業員へ説明できるようになっていただくことを目的に、実際に豊島を訪問し、国内最大級の不法投棄事件の現場となった豊島の歴史を学び、島の環境保全・再生活動・サステナビリティ研修等に取り組んでいただきます。活動は1泊2日で実施され、”民泊”を通じて、現地住民の方と交流を図れることも当プログラムの魅力となっています。

The aim is for participants to deepen their understanding of the Olive Fund and its activities and to be able to explain them to customers and fellow employees in their own words. To this end, participants will visit Teshima, learn about the history of Teshima, the site of one of Japan's largest illegal dumping incidents, and engage in activities such as environmental conservation, revitalization, and sustainability training. The program lasts for two days and one night, and one of its attractions is the opportunity to interact with local residents through homestays.
