秋田杉を使った『おけ』と『たる』は、古い歴史をもっている。また、それぞれに違いがある。『おけ』は、木を柾目状に使い、ふたのないものが多く、おひつ、すし半切、漬物桶など。『たる』は、木を板目状に使い、蓋が固定され、酒や醤油の液体の貯蔵、運搬などに使われる。

Oke and Taru are round vessels constructed of wooden staves of akita-sugi and bound with hoops made of domestic bamboo or copper. Masame cut (straight grain) akita-sugi wood and no lid is used for oke, itame cut (cross grain) akita-sugi wood and fixed lid for taru. Rice chests, sushi-rice mixing vessels (oke products), sake or soy sauce casks (taru products) are manufactured in this region.
