桜流鏑馬

日本古来の伝統武芸である流鏑馬を「スポーツ流鏑馬」として競技化し、青森県十和田市中央公園の桜並木の下を馬が駆け抜ける競技会イベント「桜流鏑馬（さくらやぶさめ）」を毎年4月に開催しています。
「桜流鏑馬」は、桜並木が満開となり内外から訪れた大勢の花見客で賑わう。そこに登場する馬も人も古式ゆかしい伝統装束を身にまとい、華麗な騎射の腕を競う騎士は全て女性であり、華やかで優雅な雰囲気を演出しています。
平成27年には「第20回ふるさとイベント大賞」で最高賞の内閣総理大臣賞を受賞。また、平成31年には世界各地域の出身者で構成された特別審査員と外国人審査員が評価する「COOL JAPAN AWARD 2019」を受賞するなど、全国でも類のない貴重なイベントとして評価されました。
イベントでは、馬は全て和種・和種系のみを使用することで、かつて当地で生産されていた南部馬の面影を、見物客の皆様に楽しんでいただくことと、伝統を引き継いでいくため高校・大学などの地域団体と連携し運営することで、選手・指導者のみならず次世代の地域人材の育成も目的としています。

SAKURA YABUSAME

We have turned Yabusame, a traditional Japanese martial art, into a competitive sport known as "Sports Yabusame" and hold the Sakura Yabusame event every April in Towada City’s Chuo Park, where horses gallop beneath rows of cherry blossoms in full bloom.

This event is held at the peak of cherry blossom season, attracting many spectators from both Japan and abroad. The riders, all female, compete in horseback archery while dressed in elegant traditional attire, creating a dazzling and graceful spectacle.

In 2015, Sakura Yabusame won the Prime Minister’s Award, the highest honor at the 20th Furusato Event Awards. In 2019, it also received the COOL JAPAN AWARD, which is judged by an international panel. These recognitions highlight its uniqueness as a one-of-a-kind event in Japan.

All horses used in the event are of Japanese native breeds or native-breed lineage, allowing spectators to experience the legacy of the Nambu horse, once bred in this region. The event is organized in collaboration with local high schools, universities, and community groups to preserve tradition and foster the next generation of regional leaders, including both competitors and instructors.
